Alvin Knabe, 94, Medford, died Friday, Sept. 11 at Wausau Hospice House, where he had resided the past three days.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept. 17 at 1:30 p.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Medford, with Father Gerard Willger officiating. Burial will be at Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery in Medford. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren, Kevin, Brian, Thomas, Susan, John and Andrew Knabe, and Melissa Van De Loo.
Visitation will be held at Hemer Funeral Home in Medford on Thursday from noon to 1:15 p.m.
Alvin Knabe was born October 22, 1914 in Plentywood, Mont., to the late Emil Knabe and Agnes (Samuelson) Knabe-Johnson.
He attended Medford area schools.
On June 1, 1938 in Merrill, he married Evelyn Werhand, who preceded him in death on February 1, 1994. In his early years he worked in the Perkinstown CCC Camp and at Hurd Millwork in Medford for many years until his retirement.
He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Medford Catholic Knights of Columbus and Chequamegon Bird Club. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and woodworking.
Survivors include four sons, James (Dorothy) and Thomas (Christine), both of Rockford, Ill., Timothy of Medford and Terrance of Denver, Colo.; eight grandchildren, Kevin, Brian (Sandra), Thomas (Laura), Susan, John (Kenzie) and Andrew Knabe, all of Rockford, Melissa (James) Van De Loo of Milwaukee, and Taylor Knabe of Denver; and 14 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Darlene Knabe; and two sisters, Mabel and Emily.
