----Kroll, Maurice "Maury" E. (December 20, 1920 - July 27, 2009)  

 

Maurice "Maury" E. Kroll, age 88, of Medford, formerly of Shawano, passed away on Monday afternoon, July 27, 2009 at Memorial Health and Rehab Center in Medford, where he had been a resident for the past three months. 

 

Maury was born December 20, 1920 in the Town of Herman, Shawano County, a son of the late John M. and Emma (Viergutz) Kroll.  He attended country schools in Hermansfort and later Shawano High School, graduating in 1939.  

 

Following high school he attended the agriculture short course at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. After completing the course, he returned to farm the family homestead in the Town of Herman. 

 

On June 8, 1946 he was united in marriage to the former Hazel Jensen at Friedens Lutheran Church in Bonduel.  

 

Following their marriage the couple lived and farmed the family homestead. While farming, Maury took a part time job as a soil conservationist working throughout Shawano County. In 1965 he was hired full time as a soil conservationist for Taylor County and he moved his family to Stetsonville. He held that position in Taylor County for eight years, and in 1973, returned to Shawano. He was employed as a soil conservationist for Shawano County until his retirement in 1984. The couple lived in Shawano until 1993 when he and Hazel moved to Medford. 

 

Maury is a current member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Medford. He is a former member of Divine Savior Lutheran Church in Shawano. 

 

In his younger years, Maury was an excellent baseball player and he continued his love of the game by playing softball well into his 40s in the over 40 league in the area, as well as umpiring many games. He was an avid bowler and loved playing sheepshead. Maury was an excellent dancer and he loved to polka. He had been a very faithful member of the Golden "K" Kiwanis Club. He was also a charter member of the Red River Sportsman Club. Maury had served on the Stetsonville Volunteer Fire Department while living there. 

 

Survivors Include his wife, Hazel of Medford; three daughters, Karen (Tom) Krebsbach of Medford, Krista (Tim) Ludwig of Mayville and Karla (Arthur) Kilmpke of Medford; four grandchildren, Stephen Ludwig, Daniel (Meredith) Ludwig, Bethany Ludwig and Rebekah Ludwig; two brothers, Donald Kroll of Bonduel and Robert Kroll of Shawano; one sister-Iaw, Lamae Buckoski of Green Bay; and many nieces and nephews. 

 

He was preceded in death by one sister, Lorian Wichmann.  

 

A memorial service for Maurice Kroll will be held on Monday, August 3, 2009 at 3 p.m. at Divine Savior Lutheran Church in Shawano. Pastor James Naumann will officiate.  

 

Interment will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery of Shawano. Relatives and friends may call at the church on Monday from 2 p.m. until the time of service.
