Donald O. Dobberstein, 74, Medford, died Friday, June 18 at Ministry St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, palliative care unit, where he had been a patient for the past 5 days.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, July 1 at 11 a.m. at Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church, Medford, with Rev. James Krueger officiating. Inurnment will take place at Medford Evergreen Cemetery II. Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 1 from 9 a.m. until time of services Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church.


Donald Dobberstein was born September 18, 1935 in Reedsburg. He received his elementary education at Hillpoint and Elroy. He was a graduate of Northwestern Prep. High School in Watertown and a graduate of Dr. Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minn. On August 4, 1957 in Madison, he married Jeanette L. Hoyord who survives.


After his education, he taught school and/or served as principal for a total of 40 years. From 1957 to 1959 he was at Emanuel Lutheran School in Fairfax, Minn., from 1959 to 1990 he was at Immanuel Lutheran School in Medford, and from 1990 until his retirement in 1997 he was at Immanuel Lutheran in Kewaunee. In June of 1997 they returned to Medford and he worked as a visiting minister for Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church in Medford. He enjoyed his beagles, fishing, reading, gardening, yard work and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church in Medford.


In addition to his wife, Jeanette L. Dobberstein of Medford, survivors include his children, Debra (Nathan) Walworth of Lansing, Mich., Susan (Jeff) Beard of Westboro, Lori (Doug) Emmerich of Medford, Carrie (Charlton) Morden of Eau Claire, Mark (Sandy) Dobberstein of Oakdale, Minn.; 14 grandchildren, Joshua (Erica), Aaron (Nicole) and Zachary Walworth, Tyler and Heidi Dobberstein, Sarah, Marah and Megan Beard, Dustin (Heather) and Cody Haynes, Carissa, Chaeli and Cole Morden and Alex Emmerich; three step-grandchildren, Brienna and Colton Emmerich and Amber (Mike) Bartelt; eight great-grandchildren, Ethan Dobberstein, Stephen and Karlee Walworth, Aubrey, Anthony, Caleb and Elizabeth Haynes and Kylan Beard; one step-great grandchild, Alec Bartelt; one sister, Rita (Dave) Allerheilign of West Allis; one sister-in-law, Judy Otten of St. Paul, Minn., and one brother-in-law, Gene Hoyord of St. Paul, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Dobberstein and Loretta Rambow, and a sister, Ruth Beutel.
