Luz M. Serrano, 87, Dorchester, died Wednesday, April 7 at St. Joseph's Hospital emergency room in Marshfield, where she had been taken earlier by ambulance. No services will be held at this time. Cremainal inurnment will take place in Hatillo, Puerto Rico.


Luz Serrano was born May 7, 1922 in Naguabo, Puerto Rico, to the late Jose and Obdulia (Vergara) Barris. She graduated from high school in Naguabo. After high school she worked in a factory that made clothing and hats.


On June 22, 1955 in New York City, New York, she married Jose Serrano, who preceded her in death on November 8, 1988. They owned and operated a grocery store in New York City from 1962 to 1970, then moved to Puerto Rico. After her husband's death, she moved to Dorchester in 2000 to be close to her son and his family.


She enjoyed cooking, flower gardening, dancing and especially her family. She was a very religious woman.


Survivors include her son, Jose (Sarah) of Dorchester; five grandchildren, Jenny, Jose, Stephanie, Joseph and Mya Serrano; and three great-grandchildren.


In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Francisco; and three sisters, Josephine, Hilda and Lucia; and brothers and sisters in infancy.
