Dr. Walther "Walt" William Meyer, 86, Medford, died Monday, March 30 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital where he had been a patient for the past five days.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 4 at 11 a.m. at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Medford, with Rev. John Melke officiating. Burial will be at Medford Evergreen Cemetery. His grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held Friday, April 3 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Hemer Funeral Home in Medford, and at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

Walther Meyer was born May 24, 1922 in Medford to the late George F. and Irma M. (Walther) Meyer.

He was a 1940 graduate of Medford High School and studied pre-medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison before entering the United States Navy's medical program at Northwestern University. He then attended the University of Chicago Medical School, followed by an internship at University Hospital in Madison.

On November 25, 1948 at the Church of the Epiphany in Milwaukee, he married Dolores "Dee" A. Haering, who survives.

When one of the three doctors at the Medford Clinic-Hospital died, his father asked him to help out until a new doctor could be found. More than sixty years later he was still caring for the people of Medford and its surrounding area. He delivered his first baby on August 22, 1948 to a couple from Little Black, and has since delivered 6,719 babies. He was a key figure in the development of medical services in Medford having helped establish, in 1962, the Memorial Hospital of Taylor County which was later renamed Memorial Health Center. Despite retiring from his clinical practice in June 1998, he never retired from medicine.

In addition to doing consulting work and making house calls when circumstances warranted, he continued his geriatric medical practice treating a number of Memorial Nursing and Rehab Center residents. He also remained active in providing the community with education about nutrition and wellness.

He was a member of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Wisconsin Medical Society. His hobby was the establishment and development of his tree-trail farm recreation area for the enjoyment of his family and others.

In addition to his wife, Dee, survivors include his children, Kristin Meyer of Donnelly, Idaho, Walther "Wally" (Laurie) Meyer Jr. of Westboro, George F. Meyer II of Minneapolis, Minn., and Ann (Paul) Egge of Wisconsin Rapids; a brother, William E. Meyer of La Crosse; seven grandchildren, Joel Meyer of Donnelly, Jeremy (Rose) Meyer of Dallas, Texas, Jamie Grall of Appleton, Joseph Meyer of Wausau, Chelsea Meyer of Edina, Minn., Beret Ann (Conor) Casey of Birmingham, Ala., and John Egge of Minneapolis; and two great-grandchildren, Jamison and Kaden Grall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name may be made to the family to be designated at a later date.
