Bio: Burkholz, Paul J. Sr., Pastor (1867 - 1952)

Sr. (January 26, 1867 - May 13, 1952) Pastor Paul J. Burkholz, Sr. was born on January 26th, 1867 in Bavaria, Germany. He was baptized on February 3rd, 1867 and confirmed on May 17th, 1880. He immigrated to the United States alone to take up the ministry and never saw any of his family again. Pastor Burkholz received his ministerial education and training at Dr. Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minnesota, then at a seminary (not named). Due to the scarcity of pastors, he preached and taught school in mission fields at Gibbon and Dexter, Minnesota. In 1888, he accepted a call to serve Gethsemane Church in Milwaukee, which was a small mission congregation. While pastor there, he founded St. Andrew’s Church in Milwaukee. In 1889 he entered holy wedlock with Miss Maria Schaefer of Hanover, Minnesota, who was suddenly called to her eternal home as a result of an apoplectic stroke on July 16, 1925. In 1897, he accepted the pastorate in Medford, from where he also served the congregations in Rib Lake, Stetsonville and Little Black. In 1907, he accepted a call from Trinity Lutheran Church in South Mequon, where he served as pastor for over 25 years and as assistant pastor for several more years. He was united in wedlock with Miss Etta Radtke of Rib Lake on April 27, 1927. She was summoned out of this life as a result of a post-operative blood clot on December 8, 1947. Since then, Pastor Burkholz made his home with his children. He had been in ill health for some time as the result of a heart condition. On May 13, 1952, he suddenly but calmly departed this life and entered his Eternal Abode at the age of 85 years. Other members of Pastor and Mrs. Burhholz’s family surviving are Bernard Burkholz of Milwaukee, and Lucia, Mr. Walter Burhop, of Grafton, Wisconsin, both were born in Medford. On the occasion of Immanuel’s Centennial, Bernard writes: “Our Lord and Saviour should be glorified for the many blessings given to your congregation, and I am sure my father felt this way during his years in Medford.” Re: Bio: Burkholz, Paul J. I'm looking for Jasper Nelson Waffles obit, he died in 1949 in Antrim County. His wife Jennie died in 1963, could you please help me with this info.? |
