Schaller, Herbert, Pastor (May 15, 1889 - May 25, 1967)

Pastor Herbert Schaller was born at Cape Girado, Missouri, the son of Professor John Schaller and his wife Emma (Mumm), on May 15, 1889.

In his youth, Herbert lived in New Ulm, Minnesota where his father was the first Director of Dr. Martin Luther College, when it became the training school for Lutheran parochial school teachers and later was president of Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary at Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. His father John was also the author of the “Biblekunde” (Biblical Knowledge), translated by him entitled ’Book of Books,’ used by many other Lutheran institutions.

Pastor Herbert Schaller also attended Northwestern College in Watertown, Wisconsin and graduated from the Seminary in 1912.

He started to serve as minister in Demark, Wisconsin in 1912.

On July 9, 1913, he entered the state of holy matrimony with Miss Irene Feyerherm. This union was blessed with six children, one of whom, John Irvin, preceded his father in death by accidental drowning at the Black River Dam in Medford on July 24, 1927, at the age of thirteen years, while the family live in Medford.

Prior to his service as pastor in Medford, he also served congregations at Beyer Settlement, Wisconsin and at Renville, Minnesota.

Pastor Schaller served as pastor at Immanuel’s in Medford from January 1926 until 1933.

Following his service in Medford, he served St. Paul’s congregation in Tomah from 1933 to 1950 and then at Oskaloosa, Iowa and Eagleton, Wisconsin. He retired from the ministry in 1964 and after their retirement, again made their home in Tomah.

Pastor Schaller preached his last sermon in Tomah on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the congregation he once served as pastor.

Pastor Schaller’s health began to fail in 1963, while serving in Eagleton and after a lingering illness, the Lord of life and death called him out of this life on May 24, 1967, at the age of 78 years. Funeral services were held in Tomah, but his body was brought to the Medford Evergreen Cemetery for burial on the grave lot of his son, John.

Mrs. Schaller continues to reside in Tomah.
