Josephine L. Ziegler, 81, Medford, died Friday, Nov. 19 at Memorial Nursing and Rehab Center in Medford, where she had resided the past two months.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 23 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Medford, with Father Gerard Willger officiating. Burial was at Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery in Medford.

Active pallbearers were Chuck McWilliams, Chad Ziegler, Nathan Gerum, Christopher and Melissa Schmidt, and Melissa, Mike, Daniel and Ben Jari. Honorary pallbearers were Amber Gerum, Shawn and Autumn Rose Murphy and Megan Krueger.


The former Josephine Jari was born on April 25, 1929 in the Town of Deer Creek to the late Joseph M. and Augusta (Makovec) Jari Sr.

She attended Cloverdale School in the Town of Browning. She moved to Florida where she worked as a babysitter for one year, then moved back to Medford and was a housekeeper for Holy Rosary Rectory and for the Morgan Peterson family.


On September 17, 1960 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, she married John G. Ziegler, who preceded her in death on December 19, 1999. They farmed in the Town of Browning for many years, and she was also a babysitter.


She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and Holy Rosary Council of Catholic Women. She enjoyed reading, gardening, cooking, baking, canning, listening to polka music, playing bingo, 500 Rummy, trips to the casino, taking rides in the country, traveling and visiting family and friends.


Survivors include four daughters, Kathy Ziegler and Diane Gerum, both of Medford, Patricia (Glenn) Schmidt of Westland, Mich., and Linda (Kent) Murphy of Apison, Tenn.; three brothers, Robert (LaVerne), Matt (Carole) and James (Lois), all of Medford; a sister, Margaret (Bob) Barker of Rockford, Ill.; a half-sister, Barbara Jari of Rothschild; a step-sister-in-law, LaVerne Grzegorek of Medford; eight grandchildren, Chad Ziegler of Winona, Minn., Megan (Derrick) Krueger of Fort Bragg, N.C., Nathan Gerum of Wausau, Melissa and Christopher Schmidt, both of Westland, Amber Gerum of Medford, and Shawn and Autumn Murphy, both of Apison; aunts and an uncle; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.


In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Alex Ziegler in 1993; brother, Joseph Jr.; three sisters, Marie Jari, and twins Delores and Dorothy in infancy; and a step-brother, Joseph Grzegordk Jr.


In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in her name to Holy Rosary Building Fund or for mass intentions.

Hemer Funeral Service of Medford assisted the family with arrangements.
