Betty J. Riegert, 69, Dorchester, died Saturday, Jan. 23 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield where she had been a patient the past 13 days, while under palliative care.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 27 at St. Louis Catholic Church in Dorchester, with Father Sahayanathan Nathan officiating. Burial was at Dorchester Memorial Cemetery. Her grandchildren served as pallbearers.
The former Betty Atzen was born September 22, 1940 in Chicago, Ill., to the late Melvin H. and Irene M. (Winchell) Atzen. She was a graduate of Abbotsford High School and attended the nursing program at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield.
On August 19, 1961 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Stetsonville, she married Kenneth "Ken" E. Riegert, who survives. She stayed at home to take care of their children for about 13 years, then worked at Abby Pharmacy as a pharmacy tech for 10 years. She then worked at Memorial Health Center Clinic in the insurance department for 10 years, and also at Taylor Credit Union as a teller for six years until her retirement in 2003.
She was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church. She enjoyed being around her family and friends, especially her grandchildren, gardening, shopping, reading and traveling.
In addition to her husband, survivors include four children, Scott (Nancy), Sandra (Pepe) Aguilera and Shelly (significant other Jerry Bucki), all of Dorchester, and Sally (Ed) Hebda of Stevens Point; a brother, Bill (Janice) of Monona; two sisters, Linda (Howard) Atzen-Sprengel of Belleair Bluffs, Fla., and Nancy Atzen of Duluth, Minn.; nine grandchildren, Lindsey, Jon and Michelle Hebda, Breanna, Brandon, Emilio and Tori Riegert and Joseph and Isabella Aguilera; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and many friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to her family for designation to St. Louis Catholic Church for masses and to Marshfield Research Center.
Hemer Funeral Service of Medford assisted the family with arrangements.
