Thema Darlene Neubauer, 85, Medford, died Wednesday, July 21 at Memorial Health and Rehab Center in Medford.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, July 26 at 11 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Medford, with Father Gerard Willger and Deacon Joe Stefancin officiating. Interment was at Holy Rosary Cemetery in Medford. Pallbearers were Lewe Jon Jossart Jr., James Lee Neubauer, Jeffrey Bachmann, Ricky Neubauer, James Lee Downing, Lauri Ann Bachmann, Ashley Marie Thema Friedenfels and Mindy Sue Friedenfels.


The former Thema Downing was born April 30, 1925 in Vernon County, Ontario to the late Bert and Olive (Owens) Downing.

She attended Fairview Graded School in the Town of Ontario. The family moved to Westboro in 1935 and she attended and graduated from Wildwood Graded School in Westboro.


On August 20, 1940 in Mauston, she married Carl Wolfgang Neubauer, who preceded her in death on September 26, 1977. She was a nurse's aid for 16 months at Medford Hospital, and 9-1/2 years at Rib Lake Nursing Home.


She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church. She enjoyed reading and spending time with her family.


Survivors include three daughters, Sharon (Lewe) Jossart of Hubertus, Bernadine (special friend Walter Gray) Holtz of Mesa, Ariz., and Elaine (Michael) Friedenfels of Medford; two sisters, Abbie (Wayne) Pauer of Medford and Dema Pundsack of Fairdealing, Mo.; two sisters-in-law, Arlene Downing of Butler and Viola Downing of Medford; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.


In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by six brothers, Buford, Russell, Homer (Mildred), Dorse Lee, Ronald and Rudy; a sister, Ruby Downing; a grandson, Christopher Friedenfels on December 12, 1998; three infant daughters, Janet, Mary and Karen; a son, Gerald on December 24, 2000; and a son-in-law, Jonathon James "Jack" Holtz on March 27, 1996.

Dallmann-Kniewel Funeral Homes of Medford and Rib Lake assisted the family with arrangements.
