Bergmann, Herb (1927? - 13 Jan. 2009)

Herb Bergmann appreciated big trees.

January 19, 2009 — The former Taylor County Board chairman leaves a legacy in evergreen as many who knew him point to his leadership with the Gerstberger Pines project as his most important during his days in elected office.

The 20-acre preserve is located east of Rib Lake. The 3/4 mile interpretive trail offers visitors a glimpse in logging practices and the environmental history of the area. The parcel is part of the Taylor County Forest, but its purchase and development have not followed the normal role of county forest lands in large part because of its educational role.

"He was very supportive of the timber sale projects and public use of the forest," Brad Ruesch of the Taylor County Forestry Department said.

Bergmann, 82, a Town of Goodrich resident, passed away January 13. His funeral was Friday, and included military honors for the World War II veteran and member of the Bergmann served 18 years on the Taylor County Board, including serving as chairman from 1996 to 2000. He was a the Town of Goodrich clerk from 1966 to 2004. He served in the United States Army from 1945 to 1947 and was stationed in the Philippines.

Bergmann is survived by his wife of 54 years, Priscilla "Peachy" I. Bergmann, four daughters, Susan (Dan) Thiede and Barb (Jeff) Ludwig, both of Medford, Nancy (K.C.) Corley of Stetsonville, and Cindi (Jim) DeKoch of Zelienople, Penn.,; two brothers, Norman and Roland (Jean) both of Medford, and a sister, Carol (John) Zinkowich of Athens; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
