--------- Shufelt, Elwin (16 SEP 1912 – 3 MAY 1949)

(From our Hannibal correspondent)

Funeral services were held Friday at 2 p.m., May 6th for Elwin Shufeldt at the Presbyterian Church in Hannibal with the Rev. Mr. George Fisher officiating. Al Shufeldt, as he was known to his host of friends, was born Sept. 16th, 1912 at Hannibal and spent his entire life here.

Al had been an invalid since Christmas Eve 1936, when he was hurt in an auto accident. He spent many weeks in hospitals during the past 13 years. When at home and able he took an interest in the baseball team and the past two years attended most of the games in his wheel chair. He had recently been elected as manager of the Hannibal team this year. During the war years he kept track of all the home town boys and wrote to them.

All took sick three weeks ago and was taken to the Medford Clinic, April 29th, and died May 3rd, 1949.

During the service the choir, Mrs. Gladys Granquist, Mrs. Anna White, Carrie Burss and Royal Burss sang “Just When I Need Him Most”, “Under His Wings” and “Just As I Am, accompanied on the piano by Bessie Blazek.

The pallbearers were: Franklin Williams, Archie Mallo, Hughey Mallo, Roland Mudgett, Percy Baker and Elgin Ruse. Burial was in the Hannibal Cemetery.

Al is survived by his mother, Mrs. Corgie Shufelt, three brothers, Lloyd, Leslie and Clarence, all of Hannibal, and two sisters, Gladys, Mrs. Clarence Miller of Gilman, and Lucinda, Mrs. George Couilard of Jump River; also many other relatives and a host of friends. His father and a brother preceded him in death.
