Bernard Henry Dums, 88, Rib Lake, died Friday, Dec. 19 in the palliative care unit of St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield, after sustaining a fall on December 1.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, Dec. 23 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Rib Lake, with Father Otto Bucher officiating. Interment with full military honors was at St. Ann's Cemetery in the Town of Greenwood.

Pallbearers were David Roder, Paul Dums, Greg Dums, Dan Czerniak, Andy Dums, Tom Dums Mike Wudi and Randy Dums.

Bernard Dums was born June 22, 1920 to the late John and Margaret (Kolecheck) Dums. He lived his entire life within a mile of his birthplace and attended Highland School in the Town of Greenwood. He served during World War II in the United States Army Air Corps from 1942 through 1945.

On June 14, 1958 at St. Ann's Catholic Church, he married Hilda Kreuscher, who survives. They operated a dairy and Christmas tree farm. After retiring from the dairy business, he continued with his Christmas trees, woods-work and gardening until the time of his injury.

He was active in his church where he served as a parish council member, CCD teacher, usher, lector and greeter, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus and became a 4th degree Knight, holding numerous leadership positions. He was also a member of the Lehman-Clendenning American Legion Post No. 274 of Rib Lake and the Chelsea Conservation Club. He enjoyed working in the woods.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, George of Rib Lake; a daughter, Judy (Dan) Akin of Hewitt; a brother, John (Mary) of Rib Lake; four sisters, Marcella Dums and Helen Dums, both of Rib Lake, Regina Czerniak of Westboro and Margaret Vickers of Owen; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Robert and Loretta Schoechert of Wisconsin Rapids, Irene Royce of Glen Flora and Louise Ogle of Ladysmith; two grandchildren, Jake and Chelsea Akin; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph and Donald (Helen).

Memorial contributions in his honor may be given to the family.

Dallmann-Kniewel Funeral Homes of Medford and Rib Lake assisted the family with arrangements.
