Lester K. Schwarz, 92, Medford, died Monday, Dec. 22 at Memorial Nursing Home in Medford, where he had resided the past six years.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, Jan. 4 at 1 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Medford, with Pastor Pete Warmanen officiating. Interment of his cremated remains will take place at Perkinstown Community Cemetery at a later date.

Visitation will be at the church on Sunday from noon until the time of the service.

Lester Schwarz was born March 17, 1916 in the Town of Medford to the late Reinhold and Minnie (Berndt) Schwarz. He attended Medford area rural schools.

On May 27, 1939 in the Town of Grover, he married Gertrude Westrich, who preceded him in death on July 26, 2004.

During World War II he worked in the shipyards in Vancouver, Wash., and after returned to Perkinstown where he farmed for over 55 years.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church; served on the Grover Town Board for over 41 years, 27 as chairman, 10 as a supervisor and four as a clerk; was on the Taylor County Board for 19 years; and the highway committee for three terms. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, reading, hunting and was a sports fan.

Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Nyberg of Hammond and Judy (Gary) Anderson of Rockford, Ill.; two sons, Duane (Shirley) of Medford and Wesley (Mary) of the Town of Hammel; eight grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Lola Schwarz in infancy; a grandson, Gary Nyberg in 2002; a son-in-law, LeRoy Nyberg; three brothers, Reinhold, Elmer and Gilbert; and a sister in infancy.
