Mechelke, 101, Medford, died Thursday, Dec. 18 at Our House Assisted Living in Medford, where he had resided the past two months, most recently under the care of Hope Hospice. Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 22 at Hemer Funeral Home in Medford, with Pastor David Clements officiating and military rites performed by the Medford Military Honors Team. Interment was at Medford Evergreen Cemetery II. Pallbearers were Scott, Mark, Steven, Michael and Sara Mechelke, Dr. N.O. Jackson and Mike Clark. Clarence Mechelke was born December 22, 1906 in Cascade to the late Ernest and Helen (Lange) Mechelke. He attended Dorchester elementary schools, was a 1924 graduate of Birnamwood High School and a 1928 graduate of Marquette Dental School. He practiced dentistry in Medford until entering the United States Navy, serving during World War II in the South Pacific until his discharge in 1945, then returned to Medford. On June 22, 1940 in Dubuque, Iowa, he married Hazel I. Zentner, who preceded him in death on August 22, 2006. He continued his dental practice until his retirement. He was a past member of Medford VFW Club and served as director and guitar player for a local hometown dance band called the Medford Eagles. He enjoyed woodworking, camping, fishing, golfing and traveling. Survivors include a son, Terry (Patricia) of Hudson; five grandchildren, Scott (Nikki) of St. Paul, Minn., Mark (Kate) of Sartell, Minn., Steven (Kelly) of Hudson, Michael (Brooke) of Black Earth and Sara Mechelke of New York City, N.Y.; and seven great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Edna Bobbe, Lynn Bright, Alma Nystrom and Irma Doubleday; and two brothers, Eugene and Edwin.
