----Hempel, Esther E. (Pillar) (June 9, 1915 - November 30, 2008)

Esther E. Hempel, 93, Waupaca, died Sunday, Nov. 30 at Crystal River Nursing and Rehab Center in Waupaca.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 4 at 11 a.m. at Shepherd of the Lakes Church in Waupaca, with Rev. David Martin officiating. Burial will be in Wolf River Cemetery in Fremont.

Lewin Funeral Home of Fremont assisted the family with arrangements.

The former Esther Pillar was born June 9, 1915 in Medford to the late Herman and Lena (Rasech) Pillar.

On January 22, 1938, she married Ewald Hempel, who preceded her in death on October 3, 1982.

They owned and operated A&E Tavern in Medford for 12 years. They then moved to several different areas including Tustin, Kaukauna and Fremont.

In 1963 they moved to Naples, Fla., where they built a mobile home park and operated it for five years before selling it due to his poor health. She returned to Waupaca in February 2004.

She was a member of Shepherd of the Lakes Church.

Survivors include a sister, Elaine (Padlock) Boyson, Ariz.; a sister-in-law, Florence Pillar of Bonita Springs, Fla.; two nieces, Karen Schuelke of Florida and Judy (Carl) Stobb of Fremont; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Herman Jr.; and two sisters, Lil Schuelke and Velda "Red" Lange.

A memorial fund has been established for Shepherd of the Lakes and St. Jude Hospital.
