Steevens, 85, Medford, died Sunday, Nov. 23 at Memorial Nursing Home in Medford, where she had resided the past two weeks, most recently under the care of Hope Hospice. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Nov. 26 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Dorchester, with Pastor Jerome Freimuth officiating. Interment was at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in Stetsonville. Pallbearers were Kurt Thiede, Greg and Jeff Damm, Tylor and Michael Klish and Dan Shereda. The former Evelyn Marti was born March 23, 1923 in the Town of Frankfort, Marathon County, to the late Emil and Alma (Leipert) Marti. She attended Lawndale Elementary School in the Town of Little Black, Taylor County, and was a 1970 graduate of Wausau Beauty School. On October 12, 1939 in Stetsonville, she married Harold F. Damm, who preceded her in death on March 1, 1968. She married Fred Dable and they were later divorced. On May 29, 1993 in Dorchester, she married Jerome Steevens, who preceded her in death in October 2005. Evelyn was a wonderful, gentle soul, caring mother and homemaker. During her lifetime she resided in Stetsonville, Medford, Dorchester and most recently at Country Gardens in Medford. She worked as a hairdresser, waitressed at Strama's Restaurant and worked at Tombstone Pizza for periods of time. While residing in Stetsonville, she was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, sang in the church choir and was a member of their Ladies Aid. She was also a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Dorchester. She was a charter member of the Stetsonville American Legion Auxiliary, and was also a member of the Whittlesey Homemakers Club. She enjoyed bowling, dancing, baking, fishing, traveling and gardening. She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include her children, Sharon (Gene) Thiede of Medford, Sheila (Don) Hamann of Tucson, Ariz., Dorine Damm of Marengo, and Douglas Damm and special friend Mary (Kaudy) Wojtowicz of Roseville, Minn.; two stepsons, Barry (Kay) Steevens of Colombia, Mo. and Dale (Ginger) Steevens of Park Rapids, Minn.; a stepdaughter, Sheryl (Scott) Schmutzler of Abbotsford; three sisters, Florence Damm and Betty (Pat) Shereda, both of Medford, and Marcia Rothamer of Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister-in-law, Evie Marti of Phoenix; six grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Marie Brunner, Anna Baum and Ida Rhyner; two brothers, Clarence Marti and her brother Ernest Marti, who died on the same day as Evelyn did, and their birthdays were on the same day, the 23rd of March, 11 years apart. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to either St. Peter Lutheran Church of Dorchester or Hope Hospice of Medford and Rib Lake. Hemer Funeral Service of Medford assisted the family with arrangements. |
