On June 2, 1947 in Mercer, he married Mildred Kliscz, who preceded him in death on March 16, 1983. After his education, he entered the United States Army and served during World War II. After the military, he started Mathey Trucking which he operated in Alaska and Wisconsin for many years until his retirement.

He was a member of Klossner-Dietzler VFW Post No. 5729 of Medford. He enjoyed hunting and playing the accordion.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Alex; and two sisters, Delores Linzner and Bertha Garland.

The family would like to thank Gene's wonderful neighbors and friends who have been so supportive, especially since his stroke in April.

The family requests any memorial monies be given in Gene's name to the Klossner-Dietzler VFW Post No. 5729, 240 S. Eighth St., Medford, WI 54451.
