Chester Pernsteiner was born on February 25, 1928 in Medford to the late Joseph and Ella (Crostwaite) Pernsteiner Sr. He was raised on the family farm and attended Medford area schools. After his schooling, he helped on the farm and worked in the harvest fields in North Dakota during the summer months.

On April 3, 1948 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Medford, he married Clare B. Riehle, who survives.

They farmed in the Medford area until 1954, then in 1955 purchased a farm north of Loyal and he also hauled milk and did custom field work. In 1973, he and his son, John, started C&J Auto in Loyal and he also owned and operated Pernsteiner Gas and Oil, that his son, Jay, took over in 1975. He also owned and operated K-Korners Bar north of Loyal from 1977 to 1979. He retired and handed over the operation of the farm to his son, Jeff, in 1980. During retirement, he still worked on the farm.

He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, traveling and playing cards. In his younger years, he enjoyed bowling and playing pool.

In addition to his wife, survivors include nine children, Judy Harder of Abbotsford, John (Karlene) of Menomonie, Joann (Robert) Froeba, Jeff (Alice), Jeanine (Dallas) Nelson and Janell (Scott) Neises, all of Loyal, Jesse (Dawn) of Turlock, Calif., Jack (Tammi) of Arpin, and Jill (Patrick) Viergutz of Colby; a sister, Erna McNeely of Loyal; 27 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
