Bernard L. Selby, 89, Town of Hammel, died on Tuesday, Dec. 20 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital, where he had been a patient for one day.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Dec. 23 at 11 a.m. at Our Saviours Lutheran Church in the Town of Holway, with Rev. Kris Bjerke-Ulliman officiating. Burial will be at Our Saviours Lutheran Church Cemetery in the Town of Holway, with full military honors performed by the Medford Area Military Honors Team. Pallbearers are Douglas and Paul Campbell, Joe Karls, Matthew Bray, Darren and Ethan Krzanowski and Bob Haglund.

Visitation will be held at the church on Friday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.
Hemer Funeral Service of Medford assisted the family with arrangements.

Bernard Selby was born on September 7, 1922 in the Town of Hammel to the late Charles E. and Esther (Ottosen) Selby. He attended Sawyer Dam School in the Town of Grover. In his teen years he worked as a logger.

On October 8, 1942 in Hanover, Ill., he married Lillian A. Rickaby, who preceded him in death on April 8, 2008. He entered the United States Army and served from 1942 to 1945 in the European Theatre. After his time in the service, he returned to logging and they owned and operated a dairy farm in the Town of Grover for 33 years. He also drove pulp truck for Armin Buehler and worked for the Taylor County Highway Department for a couple of years. He continued logging until 1996, then worked a number of years for the Forest Service Senior Employment Program.

He was a member of Our Saviours Lutheran Church and Klossner-Dietzler VFW Post No. 5729 of Medford. He enjoyed pitching horseshoes, playing dartball, cutting firewood, hunting, traveling, reminiscing, and all sports, especially playing and watching softball. He was a past player for the Sawyer Dam Softball Team.

Survivors include a son, Michael of Medford; a daughter, Yvonne (Lyle) Schwarz of the Town of Grover; a son-in-law, Richard Campbell of King George, Va.; a brother, Lester (Martha) of Greenfield; six grandchildren, Gena (Bob Haglund) Selby of Green Bay, Leslie (Joe) Karls of Blue Mound, Polly (Matthew) Bray of Huntersville, Ala., Douglas (Erin) Campbell of Charlotte, N.C., Paul (Nancy) Campbell of St. Leonard, Md., and Andrea (Darren) Krzanowski of Mosinee; and 11 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Laurel "Laurie" M. Campbell in September 2011; a sister, Ethel Baur; and three brothers, Harlan, Eldon and Ray.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in his name to Our Saviours Lutheran Church.
