Irene A. Kautzer, 97, Medford, died on Thursday, Jan. 12 at Memorial Nursing and Rehab Center in Medford, where she had resided the past five years.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Jan. 16 at Hemer Funeral Home in Medford, with Rev. James H. Babler officiating. Burial was at Medford Evergreen Cemetery II. Pallbearers were her grandsons, Randy Roesler, Todd Peissig, and Greg, Kevin, Steve, Wayne Jr. and Tracy Kautzer.


The former Irene Strebe was born on December 8, 1914 at Fenwood, Marathon County, to the late Ray and Bertha (Bradow) Strebe. She attended Fenwood area and Town of Goodrich elementary schools. During her youth, she moved with her family to the Town of Goodrich.


On February 20, 1930 in Goodrich, she married Louis B. Kautzer, who preceded her in death on July 15, 1967. They lived in the Town of Goodrich where she operated a small hobby farm, then in 1956 they moved to the Town of Browning. She also worked at the Rib Lake Cheese Factory and retired from the Rib Lake Shoe Factory.


She enjoyed embroidery, crosswords, reading and gardening.


Survivors include two daughters, Janette Roesler of Menomonee Falls and Sharon (Lanny) Peissig of Medford; two sons, Dennis (Audrey) of Stetsonville and Dean (June) of Medford; a sister, Myrtle Kautzer of Princeton; a brother, Virgil of Aurora, Minn.; a daughter-in-law, Helen Kautzer of Medford; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.


In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Wayne "Rusty" in 2000; a sister, Rosella Shaddock; three brothers, Arnold, Reinhold and Delphin; and a son-in-law, Julius Roesler.


In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given to the family for future designation.
