Edmund Sylvester "Les" Hommel, 94, Rapid City, S.D., died on Monday, Jan. 23 at Westhills Village Nursing Home in Rapid City, where he had resided the past 20 years.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Jan. 27 at 1 p.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cathedral, Lady's Chapel, in South Dakota, with Father Ed Vanorny officiating. Interment and graveside services will be held on Monday, Jan. 30 at 11:30 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery in Medford, with Deacon Joe Stefancin officiating. Pallbearers are Mark and DeAnn Hommel, Mary and Paul Tishim and Dean and Sharon Hommel.

Visitation will be held at the church in South Dakota on Thursday, Jan. 26 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., with wake and rosary following, and at Hemer Funeral Home in Medford on Monday from 9 to 11 a.m.

Edmund Hommel was born on March 30, 1917 in Thompson, Iowa, to the late Roman and Clara (Leininger) Hommel.

He moved to the Medford area with his parents in 1920 and was a graduate of Medford High School. In 1934, he moved to South Dakota and stayed with an aunt and uncle until August 1936 when he moved to St. Francis, S.D., where he worked for 58 years at the Indian mission as a fifth and sixth grade teacher, and later as a bookkeeper and accountant. He retired in 1990 and moved back to Rapid City in 1994.

He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cathedral and Kiwanis. He enjoyed reading and traveling.

Survivors include nieces and nephews, Dean and Sharon Hommel of Medford, Mary and Paul Tishim of Marshfield and Mark and DeAnn Hommel of Westboro; a great-niece, Sydney Tishim of Marshfield; and a sister-in-law, Ella Hommel, of Medford.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Roman Jr. on January 13, 1989.
