Cox, Oscar W. (19 Apr. 1934 – 26 June 2008)

Oscar W. Cox, 74, of 1566 Hwy. 80, Babcock, died Thur., June 26, 2008, at Kennedy Park Nursing Home, Schofield, after a short battle with cancer.

Services will be at 4 p.m. Thur., July 3, 2008, at the United Church of Christ, Babcock. The Rev. Doug Schalow will officiate. Hayden-Buettgen Funeral Home of Wausau is providing cremation services.

Oscar was born April 19, 1934, in Meadow Valley, to Ole and Pearl (Hancock) Cox. He married Hannelies Schreiber on Dec. 28, 1957, in Bad Neustadt, West Germany. He served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1962. In 1964, Oscar moved his family to Sutherlin, Ore., where he was employed as a diesel mechanic for Roseburg Lumber. In 1975 Oscar moved his family back to Babcock where he and his wife owned and operated Cox's Market for 22 years. After closing Cox's Market, Oscar worked seasonally for Ocean Spray Cranberries.

Oscar served as a town of Remington supervisor since 2003 and was a member of American Legion Post 322. Oscar enjoyed fishing at the local marshes and hunting.

Survivors include two daughters, Dixie (Mike) Slovensky of Vesper, and Teresa (Elliott) Sanford of Minong; and one son, Roy (Rena) Cox, of Sutherlin, Ore.; four grandchildren, Tyler Slovensky, Curtis (Michelle) Millard, Bill Millard, and Elies Sanford; two brothers, Harold (Helen) Cox of Wisconsin Rapids, and Fred (Virginia) Cox of Babcock; two sisters, Emma (Edwin) Powell of Marshfield, and Helen (Ben) Richer of Mather; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Hannelies; five brothers, Carl, Clifford, Glen, Gordon, and Robert, and one sister, Mabel.
