Sally N. Gross, 78, of 4123 15th Place S., Wisconsin Rapids, died unexpectedly Sat. May 9, 2009, at her home.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wed., at First Congregational Church, Wisconsin Rapids. Family and friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until time of services Wed. at the church.

Sally was born Oct. 3, 1930, in Chicago, to William and Virginia (Forbs) Nissen. Sally met her husband, Bill, while they both attended Ripon College. They were married Nov. 24, 1951, in Chicago; lived in Sheboygan for three years; and then moved to Wisconsin Rapids, where they have resided since.

Sally is survived by her husband, Bill; son, Dan (Jane) Gross, Wisconsin Rapids; son, Barry (Mari) Gross, Neenah; her three grandchildren, Abby, Derek, and Julia; and former daughter-in-law, Merrilee Gross, Neenah. She is further survived by nieces and nephews, Ginni (Fred) Smith, Austin, Texas, Doug Nissen, Austin, Texas, Betsy (Bart) Thompson, Fort Collins, Colo., Bill (Debi) Nissen, Bloomington, Ill., Robin (Doug) Singer, San Antonio, Cathy (Bob) Drysgula, Gaithersburg, Md., Steve (Anna) Carlson, Minneapolis, and Michael Carlson, Boston.

Sally was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Bill.

Many knew Sally for her 30-year career at DeByles. She made many friends there and passed on her passion for clothing to her family.

Sally lived a wonderful life and loved hosting family get-togethers and watching her grandchildren make themselves home in her house. Everyone knew where Gramma/Nana kept the goodies.

She and Bill enjoyed the camaraderie and challenges of the Packs and Paddles Canoe Club, and serving as Tripmaster several times. They also spent many a night dancing with the Whiting Dance Club or at the Mead Inn to Billy Anderson.

Sally saw the good in everyone and made others see the good in themselves. She brightened every room with her beauty and elegance. Her friends and family marveled at her strength, her energy, her love of life, even in the difficult times. She was always happy. She is deeply loved. She was the light of our lives and will live in our hearts forever.

You are the joy in our family, our strength, our guiding light. We are proud to be your family. We will honor you, remember what you taught us, and will represent you well. Mom, you remain invincible. You will not be forgotten. We love you! Thank you for all the love you gave and the wonderful example you set of how life should be lived.

Here's to you, Sally, Mom, Gramma, Nana ... Cheers!

In lieu of flowers, money can be given to the local food pantry at the First Congregational Church.

Higgins Funeral Home is assisting the family.
