Emmel, Vernon H. (28 Aug. 1922 - 19 Apr. 2009)

Vernon H. Emmel, 86, of Marshfield, died Sun. April 19, 2009, at the Miller Alternative Care Center under the tender care of Ministry Home Care Hospice.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thur., April 23, 2009, at the Hansen-Schilling Funeral Home, Marshfield. The Rev. Mark Krueger will officiate. Maldon Plank will provide special music with Duane Helgerson serving as soloist. Burial will be in the Brooklawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in the town of Richfield. Pallbearers will be Glen and Jesse Hanneman, Joseph Emmel, James Vilter, Timothy Emmel and Teddy Oestreich. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thur. at the funeral home.

Mr. Emmel was born Aug. 28, 1922, on the family farm in the town of Lincoln. He was the son of George and Alfreida (Roho) Emmel. Vernon attended Shady Lane School in the town of Lincoln.

Vernon was married to Naomi Smith from 1950 to 1965. In 1968, he married the former Erna Weikum until the couple divorced in 1986.

Mr. Emmel operated a dairy farm in the town of Lincoln for approximately 20 years. Vernon also drove school bus No. 11 for many years; at one time or another, he drove all the Marshfield routes. Vernon was famous for always wearing a red vest and cowboy hat. He enjoyed the students and they affectionately called him "Tex" or "The Chief." Mr. Emmel was also employed at Sternweis & Sons (formerly Mengel Ready Mix) for over 20 years until the time of his retirement.

He is lovingly survived by his children, Marsha (Glen) Hanneman, Tomahawk, and Timothy V. Emmel, Wausau; grandchildren, Jesse Hanneman, Lisa (Greg) Lawson-Emmel and Joseph T. Emmel; great-grandchildren Lilly Ann and Tyler Lawson-Emmel and Caden Emmel. Two sisters, Janice Kirschbaum, Stratford and Sally (Jeff) Fiddler, Chicago, Ill., and a special friend, Veronica Hirsch, further survives Vernon.
