Meyer, Claire M. (7 Apr. 1918 – 3 Nov. 2008)

Claire M. Meyer, 90, of Marshfield, died Mon. afternoon, Nov. 3, 2008, in the Palliative Care Unit at Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Sat. at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church with the Rev. Don Meuret. Suzanne Golden will be the organist along with Michael Gonering as the vocalist and cantor. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Marshfield.

Visitations will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Fri. at Rembs' Funeral Home (300 S. Oak Ave. - Marshfield, WI) from 10:30 a.m. until time of the services Sat. at the church. There will be a combined rosary service at 6:30 p.m. Fri. at the Rembs' Funeral Home (300 S. Oak Ave. - Marshfield, WI) by the Knights of Columbus, Our Lady of Peace Parish and Parish Council of Catholic Women Society.

Claire was born April 7, 1918, in Jersey City, N.J., to Joseph and Elizabeth (Stevens) Stanley. She was united in marriage to Herman A. "Red" Meyer on Dec. 12, 1943, at the All Saints Catholic Church in Jersey City, N.J. They would have celebrated 65 years of marriage in December. Claire is survived by her husband, Red; children, Patricia (Carl, M.D.) Meyer Chan, PhD of Milwaukee, Monica (Ken, DDS MSD) Lang, RPh of Reno, Nev., and Cheryl L. (Raynold) Anderson of Madison; five grandchildren, Christopher and Diana Chan, Nathan, Alex and Natasha Lang. Claire was the middle child of seven. She is further survived by a sister, Edna Stanley of Coopersburg, Pa.; and two brothers, Raymond Stanley of South Amboy, N.J., Eugene Stanley of Whitehouse Station, N.J.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Bernard and Joseph Stanley; and a sister, Florence McMahon.

Those who knew Claire were impressed with her energy and passion. She was particularly devoted to her children, her parents and her students. Claire imbued her own children with a love of learning and shared that love with her first- and second-grade students. Claire taught at All Saints School in Jersey City, Our Lady of Peace in Marshfield and at St. Mary's in Greenwood. She loved teaching and was a masterful teacher of reading and math. Although she retired decades before, up until the day she died Mrs. Meyer continued to receive letters and hugs from her former students.

Claire's family was blessed in that she was able to say personal good-byes to each of them. They are also thankful for the compassionate care she received from the nurses on the Palliative Care Unit.

In her memory, a fund to buy books for the next generations of readers will be established at Our Lady of Peace School library.
