Bio: Melbauer, Charles George (1928) Contact: Ken Wood. ----Surnames: Melbauer, Muraski, Kuhl ----Source: Marshfield News-Herald (Wood Co., Wis.) 17 Sept. 1928 Charles George Melbauer was born in Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany, October 22, 1893, and immigrated to this country with his parents when he was six years old. His mother, Mrs Anton Melbauer, resides in Mattoon. His father passed away 20 years ago. Settling in Sheboygan, the family soon after locating there moved to Antigo, where he attended the Catholic school. At the age of 17 he went to the state of Washington and worked there two years. Returning to Antigo, he became a helper in a cheese factory near that city, a position he held until May 1916, when he enlisted in the coast artillery of the United States Army, in which he served three years and two months, spending two years in the Philippines, four months in Siberia, and the rest of the time at Fort Berry near San Francisco, California. During this military service he earned promotions from private to first-class gunner, to corporal and to sergeant. Following his discharge from the army he accepted the position of foreman in the Clintonville house of the C. S. Straubel Cheese Company, with which he has been since. After working three years in Clintonville he was transferred to a similar job in the Antigo house, which he held two years. Next he managed the company’s Wittenberg house two years and the Marion house two and a half years and August 1 last was assigned to the management of the local house. His family will join him here as soon as he finds a desirable house for rent. Mr. Melbauer was married to Miss Frances Muraski, daughter of Andrew Muraski, Clintonville, by Father Kuhl in St Rose’s Catholic Church, Clintonville, September 5, 1922. They have two children, Charles Jr. 4 and Ruth Marie, 2 weeks old. Mrs. Melbauer’s mother passed away eight years ago. Politically, he is Independent. His hobbies are fishing and hunting.
