August Herman Kuehl was born in the township of Wayne, Washington County, October 22, 1875. When he was three years old his parents moved to Milwaukee, where he attended the public school. At the age of 13 the family located in this city and he continued his school work in the parochial school of Immanuel Lutheran Church. After leaving school he accepted employment as fireman at the B. F. McMillan sawmill at McMillan. Three years later he changed to a job at the old bedding factory, managed by E. E. Ames, which he held nine years, during the greater part of which time he served as a foreman. Next he worked ten years in the Lang and Scharmann Machine Shop, where he learned his trade. In 1913 he and Fred Kuethe opened a machine shop of their own, which is known under the name of Kuethe and Kuehl.

Mr. Kuehl was married to Miss Martha Hintz of Mannville on October 11, 1900. They have five children, Lorena, Hazel, Esther, Adeline and Richard. He is a member of the Aid Association for Lutherans and the Immanuel Lutheran Church. Politically he is Republican. His hobby is card playing.
