Isaac N. Earl GAR Post 112 Colby, Wisconsin
Established: Dec 1883. It was disbanded in 1931 after 48 Years. Charter Members are unknown. The namesake of Colby Post 112, Isaac N. Earl, had a military career of which movies are made. Enlisting at the outset of the war in the Fourth Wisconsin, from Kilbourn, now Wisconsin Dells, he entered Company D, then commanded by Captain Joseph Bailey, the later savior of the Red River Fleet. As corporal of the company, he was captured on May 27, 1863, at Port Hudson, but escaped by outrunning the guard, jumping into the river, and swimming across to friendly forces depite two wounds suffered in the escape. He was therupon promoted to second lieutenant of Company D and was serving as such when the Fourth was converted to Calvary. He was captured again. This time he was placed in irons. But he cut through the chains and escaped. Captured once more with the aid of bloodhounds, Earl escaped again and was recaptured. He escaped a fourth time, was wounded in the attempt, but made his way through swamps to the Gulf coast where he got to a Union gun boat. On another expedition in November 1864, he was shot by a Confederate and sustained buckshot wounds. Again he was captured. This time the Hollywood scenario ends. He died during this final captivity from the wounds. |
