Upon receiving orders to proceed to Memphis, Tennessee to support General Sherman, the 113th Infantry Regiment left Camp Hancock, Illinois 6 November 1862.

Upon its arrival in Memphis it went into encampment where it remained until it joined the Tallahatchie Expedition, which lasted 21 November through 10 December 1862. It was active in the 29 December Battle of Chickasaw Bluffs when Union forces suffered a loss of 1776 killed as opposed to the Confederates loss of 207 dead, and went from there to Arkansas Post, where it again suffered heavy losses on 9 January 1863.

The Regiment was posted in the rear of Vicksburg on the evening of 18 May 1863, and participated in the assaults of the next two days in which it once more suffered heavy casualties.

Due to the tremendously high loss of men, the remainder of the term of service was devoted largely to the performance of guard duty until the Regiment was mustered out on 20 June 1865.
