This regiment was organized at Camp Buckingham, Mansfield, Ohio from 6 November to 14 December 1861 to serve for three years.

 

The Regiment took to the field in December, moving into Kentucky and then to Nashville, Tennessee. It participated in the second day's battle at Shiloh, Tennessee and the siege of Corinth, Mississippi prior to moving to Northern Alabama.

 

In August it joined the race against Confederate General Bragg to Louisville, Kentucky, then returned to Nashville. The Regiment participated in the battles of Stone River and Chickamauga, Georgia, sustaining a loss of nearly 200 men. It stormed Mission Ridge and marched to the relief of Knoxville, Tennessee.

 

In the spring of 1864 it joined the Atlanta campaign, fighting all the way to Jonesboro, Georgia and followed Confederate General Hood north to Nashville, taking active part in the battles of Franklin and Nashville. It joined in the pursuit of General Hood southward, and after the close of hostilities in Tennessee it moved to New Orleans and then to Texas, where it remained until muster out December 3, 1865.

 

The following is a list of battles, in which this Regiment bore an exemplary role, acccording to the Official Army Register:

 

Georgia - Chickamauga, Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, Adairsville, Dallas, Kennesaw Mountain, Peachtree Creek, Siege of Atlanta, Jonesboro, and Lovejoy's Sta­tion. In the first two days of the battle of Chickamauga its loss amounted to more than 100 in killed and wounded; the battle at Rocky Face Ridge resulted in 21 killed and 65 wounded; and at Resaca the Regiment lost several more men killed and wounded.

 

Tennessee – Shiloh, Stone's River, Chattanooga, Missionary Ridge, Spring Hill, Franklin and Nashville. In the battle of Stone's River, of the approximately 300 engaged, the Regiment lost 75 men killed and wounded.

 

Mississippi - Siege of Corinth. Casualties unknown.
