The 1st Light Artillery Unit of the 43rd Infantry Regiment was organized in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in June 1861. Battery G was ordered to join the reserves at Tennallytown, Maryland. It participated with the reserves in the battles on the Peninsula, Second Bull Run and Fredericksburg, Virginia. The loss at Bull Run was 3 men killed and 21 wounded, losing 4 guns, 2 caissons, 2 two-wheeled gun carriages, and 27 horses captured by the enemy.
The Battery returned to Washington to be reequipped and was readied to perform support at Fredericksburg, Virginia. It was assigned to the Battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia in the spring of 1863 and then became a section of Battery F until 3 April 1864, when it was ordered to Washington, DC, again reequipped, and posted at Arlington, Virginia.
On 3 July it was stationed at Point of Rocks, Maryland until 12 December where the men were only armed with muskets. The muskets were then exchanged for 6 artillery pieces and the Battery was stationed on Maryland Heights until 16 April 1865, when it turned in its artillery and joined in the defense of Washington, DC. Again armed only with muskets the men were stationed at Fort Foote, Maryland about six miles south of Washington DC for the remainder of their service.
The Battery was mustered out at Philadelphia 29 June 1865.
