William Harrison Lowry

Wisconsin 42nd Regiment

Company I

William Harrison Lowry enlisted at Kickapoo (I think this is near Viroqua, Wi.) along with his older brother, John J. Lowry.  They were both in Company I, 42nd Regiment and both were at Cairo, Ill. The rooster states that John J. Lowry died March 9, 1865 of disease.  My grandfather never fully recovered from the conditions they suffered there and according to the pension application filed by my grandmother, Mary Ann Milton, he had lingering health problems the rest of his life.

After the Civil War William H. Lowry settled in Clark County and was in the logging business.  He logged his land along the Black River and Wedges Creek area.  He married a young girl of Levis, Sarah Jane Higgins (Jennie), in 1872.  Jennie died within the first year of their marriage and she is buried in the Neillsville City Cemetary.  He later married my grandmother, Mary Ann Milton, of Neillsville and they had six children.  In 1905 the Lowrys sold their 360 acre farm on the Black River and moved to Viroqua, Wisconsn where they bought the Viroqua Hotel.  A little later when Wm. Harrison's health began to fail they moved to Eureka Springs, Arkansas hoping a warmer climate would help him.  Other family members from Clark County (the James Milton family and their daughter, Lois Lowry Gillard) had already moved south into the Missouri and Arkansas area.

William Harrison Lowry died in 1912 in Eureka Springs, Arkansas and Mary Ann Milton Lowry died in 1929 in Webb City, Missouri while living with her daughter. They are both buried in Weaver Cemetary in Webb City, Missouri.
