  • Delton Ebben was 93 years old in Feb. 2005
  • Born near city limits on east side of Thorp on Cemetery Road
  • Father was a patrolman – graded what became Hwy 73 for many years; In winter he drove horse and cutter for Dr. Neis
  • The concreted Hwy 73 around 1924
  • Went to grade school at St. Bernard’s and high school at Thorp High School
  • He was sixth of eight kids
  • He wanted to go to college, but stock market crash occurred when he was a sophomore and his father was without work for 2 years – no money for college
  • His brother Leo took a two year course at Oshkosh and then taught school at Kohler for 45 years;  taught Shop class, then called manual training
  • His brother Roy went to college at La Crosse; He also taught at Kohler ;  His brother invited him to substitute there for a week and he stayed 17 years
  • Delton’s son works in Kohler today for Kohler Company; He has been there 38 years
  • His brother Art got meningitis.  He was born in 1916 at died at the Chippewa Hospital in 1935
  • Delton tended bar in Thorp after he graduated high school; he filled in for brother Roy for a week when Roy was gone and stayed for four years
  • 1931 to 1934 he did odd jobs; one of them was working with Jack Kingrich for Hank Huls – Hank ended up at a bar at the end of the month and spent all the money for their salary at the slot machines; that job didn’t last long
  • In 1934 he attended tech school with his older brother Harvey at Wausau
  • When he was 25 and working at the bar, his boss told him that he had bought the Royal Hotel and Bar at Stanley and wanted Delton to run it; he lived right at the hotel then
  • He married Marie Benschawel; he said he tried to kiss her in 6th grade and they got caught.  Father Muckerheide was priest and gave them “heck” for doing that.  Later he married them.  They did not see each other for 8 years after high school because she went off to St. Paul to be a nanny.
