Ella Gorsegner Notes1

  • She was born in a log cabin 2 miles south and ½ mile east of Thorp
  • 102 years old on the 18th of June 2005
  • Hansen was her maiden name
  • She was one of six kids; she was end oldest
  • Went to Fisher School, later called Pioneer
  • Went to Reseburg school for 6th, 7th and 8th grades
  • Otto Sommer Cheese factory was located a little west of Silver Dollar
  • Went to Lutheran Church in Reseburg, next to Sylvan Cemetery
  • Went 2 years to high school, but quit to take a good job at $1.00 a day; cleaned house and babysat for Dean Hubbard, 4 miles north and 1 mile west of Thorp in Breezy Hill area
  • Then went to town to work for 3 winters – Ellery & Sadie (Crowley) Jacobson.  He was a cattle buyer and they had 4 little girls
  • Got married at 20; married at Lutheran Parsonage in Thorp
  • The farmed 5 years; her husband had an accident – he was climbing neighbor’s silo and top door was rotten and gave way; he fell the whole distance to the floor;  He had a skull fracture.  After recovering, for 2 or 3 years he seemed ok, but then started having severe pain.  Surgery in 1933, but he suffered from then until his
  •             death 45 years after their marriage.  His ears turned black.  He eventually got MS.

  • They had two little girls before the accident.  Later they had a son, Leonard
  • One daughter, 80 years old, is still alive
  • Moved off farm and into town in 1939
  • Paid toward the farm for five years, but then lost it to the bank.  They stayed three years after losing it
  • Real Estate agent sent them to a home in Thorp.  She lived there until she was 100
