100 Years Ago (1906)

Stanley Sunbeams—the projected new Co. Store, the Presbyterian Church and the United Lutheran Church are expected to be built and finished by November and bricklayers, carpenters, etc. are being hired to do the work.

We are making post card photos at $1 per dozen. They are “all the go”. Brintnall Photo Studio.

St. Hedwig’s Polish Catholic Church located two miles east of Thorp, which has been under construction for nearly two years past, is approaching completion. The contractor, a. F. Wochnich, has completed his work and the installation of furniture and furnaces is now going on and it is expected to have the building ready for dedication early in September.

W. H. Sommer has rented his cheese factory on the corner two miles south of the village to the Michael Brewing Co., of La Crosse, who have opened a saloon therein.

75 Years Ago (1931)

About forty members of the newly organized Thorp Lions Club and their wives were entertained at a charter night banquet and program at the Mileaway Pavilion.

Cracker Jack now 3 for 10¢, Oranges 2 dozen for 29¢, Drummond’s Sugar Cured Back Bacon now at 16¢lb

Wit and Humor—Cooled ‘Em. Roberts: Has your car a good cooling system? Woods: I should say so! You ought so (to) see it knock the pedestrians cold!

Mitterhoffer—Mr. Jos. Lewkoski lost his new home, which was just built last fall, by fire.—Most of the folks have their grain threshed, which is very poor this year, as most of it was threshed out by hail a few weeks ago.

50 Years Ago (1956)

A barn with its contents on the Louis Lewan Farm was completely lost in a fire at 9:10 a.m., on August 13.

Campbells’ Tomato Soup 9 (10.5 oz.) 99¢, Hilex Liquid Bleach (gal. jug) 53¢, Mazola Oil (pint) 30¢ (quart) 59¢, Northern Tissue (4 roll pack) 33¢

Eddie Polnaszek, proprietor of the Club Alleys, Thorp, was elected president of the Clark County Tavern League.

At the summer meeting of the Clark County Board held at the court house at Neillsville, supervisors turned down a proposal to expand the county highway system to include16 miles of roads in the towns of Thorp, Withee, Hixon and Hoard.

25 Years Ago (1981)

The Thorp Area Ambulance District unexpectedly approved the purchase of a $37,500 ambulance and made a $5,000 down payment on August 6.

Retired railroad employee, Walter Koperski, has donated part of his collection of driftwood walking canes to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s Museum of Natural History. As a young man growing up near Thorp he worked in lumber camps, so he knows wood and how to work with it.

A rural Thorp man has been charged in connection with the discovery of more than 100 pounds of marijuana growing on a farm in Reseburg Township.

10 Years Ago (1996)

Thorp business owner, Bernard Burzynski, is featured on the cover of the August 1996 issue of Used Car Dealer magazine.

On June 15, 1996, Walter and Helen Filipek celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

30, 7th, 8th and 9th graders participated in the annual Thorp Cardinal Football Camp. Several alumni players and guest coaches taught the campers skills for all positions including blocking, catching, throwing and more.
