100 Years Ago (1906)

October 17 will be a very important day for the members of St. Hedwig’s Church at Poznan for on this day their handsome church building, just completed at the cost of $23,000 will be blessed by Rt. Rev. James Schwebach, bishop of La Crosse.

The post office department has notified Postmaster Parkhill that Rural Route No. 2 running north and west of this village will be put in operation as soon as he reports that ninety or more patrons of the route have agreed to put up approved boxes.

All slot machines were removed from business places at Colby, Owen, Withee and Dorchester last week by order of Sheriff Dwyer.

75 Years Ago (1931)

Try our hamburger sandwiches 5˘ at Drangel’s Sweet Shop.

Last Sunday the Lions Club baseball team cleaned up the American Legion Post 9-2. The legion could not seem to connect with the crooked hooks of the old warhorse Ross Lawrence. Red Smigaj, veteran of many a game, was drafted as pitcher for the Legion boys and did fairly well.

The Wild Cherry cheese factory will open up about the first of November. Mr. John Sliva has promised to haul milk for 5 cents a hundred for all farmers that are willing to cooperate.

A barn located in the north part of the village owned by Leon Bogumill, was destroyed by fire on Friday afternoon.

50 Years Ago (1956)

S/Sgt. John Ory, son of Jesse Ory of Thorp, WI, a medical technician of the 63rd Troop Carrier Wing’s Tactical Medical Center, is with his unit in New Zealand, preparing to fly to the Antarctic to airdrop cargo and supplies at the South Pole in support of Operation Deep Freeze.

Nine cattle in the 30-Holstein herd of an elderly Clark County widow died over the weekend with poisoning suspected as the cause. Sheriff Ray Kutsche reported that white powder mixed with salt had been found 50 feet from the barn.

25 Years Ago (1981)

Nolecheck Meats Inc. has been located at 104 N. Washington St. since its inception. The Nolecheck’s took over the Thorp Locker in 1952 and incorporated as Nolecheck Meats eight years ago. Nolecheck’s also operates a slaughterhouse just north of Thorp where custom meat processing is done.

Julie Slipek, Thorp, represented Clark County at the 27th Annual National 4-H Dairy Conference at Madison, WI, Sept. 29 – Oct. 2.

10 Years Ago (1996)

Glen Fifer recently took 2nd place at the State Wrist Wrestling Championships held 0n September 8 in Neillsville at Strike Times Bowling Alley.

National 4-H Week celebrates the accomplishments of 4-H youth during the week of October 6-12. The theme is “4-More Than You Ever Imagined.”
