100 Years Ago (1906)

Robert Kurth, Democrat, was elected County Treasurer over Chas. Cornelius. Thirty-four precincts out of forty-one give Kurth 479 majority.

Stanley Sunbeams – Two saloon keepers were fined last week $10 and costs each for selling liquor on Sundays.

H. S. Burdick has sold his residence property to Otto Dudonsky. Consideration $7.50

Thos. I. Steele and C. C. Clark have gone to the National Soldier’s Home near Milwaukee for the winter.

Rev. T. F. Hannaman, of Chicago, recently appointed pastor of the M. E. Church, and wife, arrived here last week and are occupying the parsonage.

The price of eggs is booming. Cranberries 3 qts. 25˘ at Snyder’s

75 Years Ago (1931)

John Holda, light-heavyweight champion wrestler, a former resident of Thorp, won a hard fought match at Detroit on October 15th from Young Londas of Cadillac, Michigan.

Harry Warden, town clerk of the Town of Thorp for many years, died at the hospital at Chippewa Falls at an early hour on Wednesday morning.

Automobile owners in Thorp and vicinity have received their application blanks for new 1932 auto license plates during the past week and announcement is made by the state motor vehicle department that applications can be sent in any time after November 1st.

50 Years Ago (1956)

Mrs. F. P. Neis, 68, passed away Wednesday morning at the hospital at Stanley, WI, where she had been taken on Tuesday evening after suffering a heart attack.

Clark County voters re-elected all Republicans to county offices, voted overwhelmingly for President Dwight D. Eisenhower and elected Corwin C. Guell of Thorp as Republican Assemblyman over Axel Sorenson of Withee, Democrat.


The Thorp fire alarm will mark the call to recollection at one minute to 11 o’clock, Monday, November 12th, when the nation will observe Veterans Day. Thorp business placed will be closed from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. during that day.

25 Years Ago (1981)

The cost of mailing a letter went up again Sunday. The rate is now 20˘, an increase of 2 cents per letter.

A twenty year reunion of the class of 1961 was held on August 8, at the Thorp American Legion Hall. Ed Barth was the master of ceremonies for the evening.

10 Years Ago (1996)

The Great Lego Create was held Saturday, November 2 in the Metrodome in St. Paul, MN with over 2,000 participants enjoying the event. The grand champion this year was a Thorp 4th grader, James J. Sukanen.
