100 Years Ago (1906)

Deer hunters are having excellent success in this vicinity, and both hunters and deer seem to be numerous.

H, F, Gruszynski has been appointed rural mail carrier on the new route to be established Jan. 2nd, with Louis Gruszynski as substitute.

Preparations are being made for building a parochial school building by St. Bernard’s Catholic congregation next spring. The structure will cost in the neighborhood of $4,000 and will be built of brick on the site purchased about two years ago directly south of the church and will include two school rooms and residence for the sisters who will be in charge.

75 Years Ago (1931)

Taxpayers of Clark County will have $151,000 less to pay next year than they did this year as a result of the economy program carried out by the Clark County Board during its session.

In spite of deer hunting being closed this season, Albert Skalecki got one anyway, but it is a real dear. She is Anna Kony, of Lublin. They were married Nov. 19th.

Ladies & misses winter coats $4.95 to $23.50; Men’s lamb lined coats $7.49; Oshkosh overalls at a price you never heard of before $1.12; Ladies’ bloomers 39¢.

Roger Creek and Townline – Mrs. Martha Warden has been appointed town clerk of the Town of Thorp and school clerk of the Peterson district to succeed her hate (late) husband, Harry Warden.

50 Years Ago (1956)

Winter 1956 was ushered in on a howling Northwest wind and dark clouds that dumped about a five and one-half inch snowfall on the county and surrounding areas.

Although elsewhere in the state it is reported that hunters are getting their bucks the first four days of the season, few area hunters find it so. Not only are there fewer deer killed in the area but less are seen of buck or doe.

Roger Turenne, Thorp, local president of Gamma Delta Lutheran organization at Wisconsin State College at Eau Claire, has been selected as president of the Lakes region for the coming year.

25 Years Ago (1981)

R. P. M. Gas and Implement Company held a grand opening last Saturday, Nov. 14 at the business located on W. Stanley St. in Thorp.

Construction was recently completed, re-vamping the exterior of The Thorp Courier.

10 Years Ago (1996)

The Thorp High School National Honor Society held a ceremony on Tuesday, November 19, to induct new members. Nine students were chosen for their scholarship, leadership, community and school service and character are: Bridget Baures, Sona Grajkowski, Jamie Polnaszek, Heather Einhorn, Sherri Haas, Josh Korn, Matt Hein, Laura Baures and Lana Wirtala.

This week marks the 114th anniversary of the first edition of The Thorp Courier. The newspaper continues its tradition as a family run business after more than a century and four generations of ownership.
