100 Years Ago (1906)

A most shocking murder occurred at the home of Matt Willhite in the Town of Hard, five miles northwest of the Village of Curtiss. The victim was Mr. Willhite and the slayer his father-in-law, P. G. Arnold.

The school in the Goff district, Town of Reseburg, has been closed on account of a case of scarlet fever.

No passengers will be allowed to ride on any main line freight trains of the Wisconsin Central Railway between Chicago and Minneapolis after this date. This order covers all class of freight trains including the way freights.

75 Years Ago (1931)

The net proceeds of the moving picture show given at the Rialto Theatre were $54.10 after deducting the cost of the film. The response of the public was very poor, considering the cause, but it will give a start in this fund. The money will be deposited in the local bank as the Thorp Relief Fund.

Thorp’s police force has been increased by one officer. Jos. Yetsko went on duty as day Marshall. C. E. Burss will be on nights.

A fire of unknown origin burned the barn of Leon Markowski. All cattle, horses, and farm machinery were lost in the fire.

50 Years Ago (1956)

Dale Ebben, local Boy Scout, received the third highest award, the Star Award, from J. R. Thompson, Member of the Eagle Board of Review, Loyal, at the Court of Honor held in the Legion Hall.

This week, Nov. 29, The Thorp Courier starts on the second issue of its seventy-fourth year of publication. The first issue of this newspaper came out on November 23, 1883, with the late Wm. Wagner Sr., as its founder, editor and publisher until May 1943, when it was taken over by Wm. S. Wagner, who later took in as partners, John J. LaGasse and Robert E. Elkins.

Henry Bzowy, 20, Thorp, recently promoted to specialist third class in Korea where he is assigned to the 7th Infantry Division.

25 Years Ago (1981)

Tuesday’s snowstorm provided perfect packing conditions to decorate the yards of area residents. Thorp received a generous allotment of snow.

Louise Misfeldt, Thorp, took home $50 after her name was drawn from the many entrants in Thorp’s Big Buck Contest.

10 Years Ago (1996)

Excitement was running high in the fifth grade classrooms while students and teachers alike anxiously awaited the arrival of Wisconsin Public Television “Get Real” hosts Andrew Bentley and Lauren Rutlin Young.

Deer registrations in the Thorp area were 319 bucks and 477 antlerless for a total of 796. This is down from 1,049 registered in 1995.
