100 Years Ago (1906)

Cordwood is moving – that is when shippers can secure cars. The price is about $4 per cord.

The residence of Frank Telford in the Town of Reseburg was destroyed by fire on Monday night.

Jas. Connor and Dr. P. McKittrick in company with several Stanley parties went up to Brohderville on Thursday last to look over a mining proposition on Leavitt Creek within a mile of Barney Broeder’s farm. Some prospecting has already been done on the property and the appearance of the ore indicates a limited quantity of copper and other metals. After more developing work is done, if the veins traced hold out inducements, a company will be formed for active work. An option has been secured on the land.

75 Years Ago (1931)

A new and larger transformer was installed at the Northern States Power High Line Station here last week. This trans-former has 33 1/3 percent more efficiency than the old one and may tend to clear up some of the radio interference in the vicinity of the station.

As a result of the letter received by Dr. W. F. Nolecheck from the state Boy Scout Organization, and read before members of the Thorp Lions Club at their semi-monthly meeting at The Club last Thursday evening, a committee of five Lions was appointed to organize a Boy Scout Troop in Thorp, secure with a charter and a scout master and assistant.

Lublin School Notes – Electric lights are being put into the grade rooms.

Flurries of snow the first of the season fell on Saturday last, continuing during the entire day. In the evening about (word missing) inches covered the ground.

50 Years Ago (1956)

The Rural Fire Department saved the home of Andrew Kubera, south of thorp in the Town of Worden Saturday morning in a two and one-half hour battle to get the fire under control.

Five Clark Co. men, Junior H. Gosse, Curtiss; Wayne J. Jackson, Greenwood; William M. Kovatch, Owen; Stanley J. Pogodzinski, and Francis J. Szczech, Thorp, were inducted into the Army Dec. 5 at the Minneapolis Induction Station.

25 Years Ago (1981)

As of 8:00 a.m., Saturday, December 5, Jack Koss, the Director of Public Works was terminated from his employment with the City by Thorp Mayor David Keating.

The Thorp Production Credit Association officially opened the doors of its new building located at 704 S. Clark St. on December 7, 1981.

Ed Asselin purchased the Thorp Bottling Works in 1928, and his three sons took over the business in 1946, remaining a family operation all these years. Today, Thorp Bottling Works remains as the sole bottler in the county.

10 Years Ago (1996)

On Wednesday, December 4, 1996, Harold Crotteau of Stanley, bowling for the Dairy Bar in the Wednesday Night Men’s Classic League, bowled games of 257, 244 and 240 for a 741 series. This is believed to be the highest series ever bowled at the Cardinal Bowl.

Leo and Alice Dmytro recently enjoyed a hot air balloon ride. The ride was an anniversary gift from their children.
