100 Years Ago (1906)

In less than two weeks daily mail service will begin on rural route number two with J. F. Gruszynski as carrier and route number one from this place will also be changed on and after New Years so as to accommodate about fifty more families than at present while only lengthening the route two miles.

The municipal electric light plant has been in constant operation for a period of five years, the lights being first turned on Christmas night 1901. During this long period the lights have been in operation steadily, not to exceed 15 minutes time having been lost altogether since the plant was started. This speaks well for the manager, Herman Stracker, who has been in charge during the entire period, and no doubt is a better record than any similar plant in the state has made for so long a time.

75 Years Ago (1931)

A Model A Ford stolen from the Altenburg Auto Co., of Withee, was found stripped on a side road three miles north of here.

Breezy Hill Cheese Factory Neighborhood – Percy Smith’s house was completely destroyed by fire at about 6:30. Nearly all of their household goods were also lost. The loss was partially covered by insurance.

Arthur Ebben, who accidentally shot himself while hunting and who has been lying in the hospital at Chippewa Falls with a 22 caliber bullet embedded in his brain, is improving.

50 Years Ago (1956)

Two persons were killed instantly and another died less than 14 hours later at a Marshfield hospital as a result of a head-on collision about 1 a.m., two miles west of Stanley on Hwy. 29. Three others in the crash were hospitalized. Clark County has only four polio cases during the past year, one paralytic and three non-paralytics, according to the annual report of the county nurse.

25 Years Ago (1981)

A fire broke out in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dave Haas in the early morning hours on Dec. 16, resulting in extensive damage to the new home at 305 W. Hill St. in Thorp.

On Friday, Dec. 11, ITT Life Insurance transferred ownership of the building located at 120 N. Washington St. to the Thorp Area Senior Citizens Center at a luncheon ceremony in Thorp.

10 Years Ago (1996)

For almost 50 years, the Ben Franklin store, first on the corner of Washington and Main Street, and later at its present location, on the corner of Washington and School Streets, in Thorp has provided Thorp shoppers with a variety of goods and services. With the coming of the mega malls and large variety stores like Shopko and Wal-Mart, small town stores have had to cling tightly to their hometown roots. As of December 31, the Thorp Ben Franklin will be forced to let go of those roots and recede into the memory of its loyal customers and patrons.
