100 Years Ago (1907)

A raging northeaster on Sunday last furnished plenty of snow for sleighing.

John Pietrasiewicz and Charles Herman have rented the Zagorski store and saloon five miles north of the village and will operate the same in the future.

Mike Zaborowski and John Raitek have leased N. P. Hansen’s blacksmith shop where they are prepared to accomplish anything in the horseshoeing line and repair work of all kinds.

“Looking Forward” is the title of a book just received from the publishers. It was written by August Cirkel formerly a resident here but now of Chicago, and its sixteen chapters bristle with social and economic problems of the day, and will interest the reader from cover to cover.

75 Years Ago (1932)

The Thorp Dairy Company has decided to start an egg department. The eggs will be shipped to Philadelphia with the carload of butter, which goes out every week.

Frank Verkuilen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Verkuilen, died at the Stanley Hospital of severe burns and other injuries suffered Jan. 1st while escaping from the burning building of John Schultz, his uncle, whom he has been assisting in his store for several months past.

Bowling at Becker’s Alleys reduced to 25˘ for 2 lines. Every person can afford to bowl at these prices.

50 Years Ago (1957)

The busy Christmas season in Thorp saw more than 16,000 pieces of mail cancelled on Monday, Dec. 17th, the peak day at the post office here. This is slightly less than the peak day of 1956 when 16, 815 pieces were recorded.

Larry A. Biddle, Thorp, has enlisted for the Regular Army Corps of Military Police for a period of 3 years.

Three Thorp men, including an airman home on a 15-day leave, were injured in a two-car crash near Thorp. Injured are: Robert Smith, Carl Johnson and Donald Papierniak.

25 Years Ago (1982)

Tragedy marred the last day of 1981 for two Thorp families with the deaths of Cynthia M. Rudnick and Connie Zurakowski, in a fiery auto-truck accident, December 31, 1981.

Snowmobilers and cross country skiers have been hoping and praying for good snow conditions for about three years. It now appears that we are getting three years of snow in a few weeks. The near perfect snow conditions are allowing skiers and snowmobilers to make up for lost time.

10 Years Ago (1997)

Jeffrey J. Frenette, son of Bernard and Eileen Frenette, Thorp, was promoted to Lieutenant, Wisconsin State Patrol on September 13, 1996.

Marine Pvt. Jason F. Conway, son of Timothy J. and Debra J. Conway of Thorp, recently completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego.
