100 Years Ago (1907)

Stanley Sunbeams – An effort has been made to make the Farmer’s Institute on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week attractive by having children of the surrounding district schools give music, songs and recitations on the evening of the first day.

H. M. Leibole is again busy with the scale rule at the Nye, Lusk & Hudson Cos. Yards.

Logs, bolts, cordwood and hay are coming in lively these days, the sleighing being excellent.

Town treasurers are busy these days collecting taxes, which items but few individuals dodge successfully.

L.F. Herzberg purchased C. H. Sheldon’s interest in the hardware business heretofore carried on by Mr. Sheldon and Mr. Herzberg as co-partners and the latter is now sole owner.

75 Years Ago (1932)

Stanley S. Chudy, local farm boy, has succeeded in getting his first song, “Ten O’clock Moon,” a popular number placed with Dick Long’s orchestra from WCCO in an initial broadcast.

County Clerk J. J. Irvine issued 163 marriage licenses during the year just passed as compared to 160 in 1930.

Howard’s O.K. Barber Shop Special, January 14th; Hair cuts 25¢, shaves 15¢

50 Years Ago (1957)

T/Sgt. Casimir M. Jarocki, son of Mrs. Victoria Jarocki and the late Peter Jarocki, was recently elected custodian of the “Rockville” NCO-Airmen’s Club at Keflavik Airport, Iceland.

The Thorp Farm Institute program attracted 150 farmers and their wives at the Thorp High School. The all day program was sponsored by the businessmen of Thorp, High School Agricultural Department and the Clark County Extension Service.

Zarada Electric has moved their business to the front part of the Thorp Locker Plant building. They now have an excellent display of radio and television sets in their new location.

25 Years Ago (1982)

The “Classroom on Wheels” will resume its service to Gilman and Thorp starting the week of January 11. The vehicle owned by the VTAE District One, provides free individualized instruction to adults in the area who would like to finish high school, bone up on basic skills, get help in better reading, letter writing, math habits, or want career information.

10 Years Ago (1997)

Electrical service to about 5700 Northern States Power Co. (NSP) customers was interrupted on January 6th. The outage, which lasted two hours, affected NSP customers in the towns of Boyd, Cadott, Owen, Stanley, Thorp, and Wissota.

City of Thorp residents will have an interesting Spring Election this year because at the close of the day on Tuesday, January 7th, the deadline for filing election papers, no candidates filed for councilman in the first ward.
