100 Years Ago (1907)

Stanley Sunbeams – The W. W. Crane & Sons Co. is about to sell out their mercantile business to Joseph Cohen; Possession to be given on or before May 1st. The Crane & Sons Co. has been an important business factor here for the last eight years. – Last Sunday was the Presbyterians day here. The occasion being the dedication of their new church building, built to replace their old one, which ws destroyed by Stanley’s historic fire. The new building cost about $6,500.

The stock of bolts and logs in the Thorp Manf’g Co’s yards is large and assures the operation of that plant all summer.

Herman Friess purchased the $2,000 stock held by M. Wiltgen in the Thorp Manf’g Co’s plant. Mr. Friess turned in forty acres of land owned by him in the Town of Reseburg on the deal.

Nye, Lusk & Hudson Co’s mill yard contains a stock of over 2,000,000 feet of logs, principally hardwood.

75 Years Ago (1932)

Consolidation of the four units of the Clark County Co-operative Dairy Sales association was perfected at Greenwood on Thursday by representatives of the units in convention at the Federation hall there.

Rialto Theatre: “The Spirit of Notre Dame” “Lasca of the Rio Grande” Greta Garbo in “Susan Lenox” (Her Fall and Rise) with Clark Gable.

Jos. Morgan opened up his lunchroom on west Main Street last Saturday and sold sandwiches 2 for 25¢ with free coffee.

Baker R. E. Schmitt was kept pretty busy last Saturday (Market Day) baking cherry and mince pies. Between the bakery and The Farmers Store two hundred and twenty five full size pies were sold at 15¢ each.

Fresh hamburger or pork sausage, 3 lbs. 25¢

Gilman – The Gilman Depot burned down on Monday morning at eleven thirty. The cause of the fire was the overheating of the stove.

Lublin – A fire of unknown origin completely destroyed the home of Ray Cichocki. All household furniture was saved. The loss was covered by insurance.

50 Years Ago (1957)

Telephone operators for the Thorp Telephone Company are having it rough these days – but, they haven’t seen nothing yet as the days come close to the date of the change over to dial.

It was quite a bombshell dropped in Thorp Saturday when it was announced that the Theatre would close its doors.

25 Years Ago (1982)

Governor Dreyfus has proclaimed Thursday, March 18, as Wisconsin Agriculture Day. While signing an official proclamation, Governor Dreyfus commended Wisconsin farmers “for their great contribution to our state and national economy.”
