100 Years Ago (1907)

Stanley Sunbeams – Stanley is troubled with scarlet fever.  Several cases were known at the middle of last week and by Saturday as many as 14 cases were discovered in the city, distributed in seven families.

Dr. W. J. Frank and druggist C. W. Wolf caught 54 trout in the creek south of the village on Sunday last – the best record so far.

Isaac LaGasse attended an examination by the state barbers’ board at Eau Claire on Monday and Tuesday and will no doubt receive a license as full-fledged barber.

“The Thorp Dairy Co.” filed its articles of incorporation with the secretary of state last week, and on Saturday afternoon held its first business meeting.

75 Years Ago (1932)

Otto Hiller has let the contract for a building on the John Schultze corner, which he recently purchased, to Ed. Acker of Owen.  The building will be used for a store and gasoline filling station.

Neiman’s Corner – Felix Mikolainis, together with the school children, planted 44 trees – oak, pine and elm on the Sunny Lawn School grounds last week, including one oak in honor of George Washington. – Fire destroyed the barn belonging to Felix Mroz May 9th.  A few calves were also burned.

50 Years Ago (1957)

The Thorp High School Band received a first award in Marching in Class B at the District Music Festival held at Eau Claire.

The Thorp Courier won an editorial award in the annual newspaper contest sponsored by the Wisconsin press Association.

Following their regular monthly business meeting the American Legion Post No. 118 members and the Auxiliary joined in celebrating the 38th birthday of the Legion at the clubhouse.

25 Years Ago (1982)

Karilyn Piwoni, 8th grade student at Gilman Public Schools, became the champion speller in the CESA #6 District Spelling Bee held recently at the Chippewa Falls Middle School.

Steven H. Baures, preparing for priesthood at The Saint Paul Seminary, will be ordained a deacon for the Diocese of La Crosse, May 21, in St. Mary’s Chapel of the Saint Paul Seminary.  Baures is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward J. Baures of Thorp.

10 Years Ago (1997)

A generous donation from several Thorp alumni and friends of Thorp High School will serve to benefit students and staff for years to come.  A drive, spearheaded by Arlene Czerwinski and Bob Kotecki raised $21,650 that was to be used specifically for the advancement of technology education at Thorp High School.
