100 Years Ago (1907)

Bobb’s Mill and Country ‘Round – The men of our neighborhood gathered at the home of W. P. Randall on Friday and erected his barn, which was recently torn down by a cyclone.

A number of descendants of the later Mr. and Mrs. John Burke held a picnic at W. E. Poppe’s farm, in the Town of Thorp, on Sunday last. Thirty-six persons were present and the occasion was much enjoyed by all.

John Smgour sold his farm east of the village last week to John Bankowski, who recently arrived from Austria.  Consideration $4,500

75 Years Ago (1932)

John Schmittfranz, a resident of the Town of Reseburg for the past ten years, met death by accidental discharge of a 22 caliber rifle on Wednesday of last week.

Roger Creek and Town Line – A large band of gypsies were camped at Hatties Rock Inn on Highway 29.

The home of Frank Swientek was destroyed by fire on July 11th.

Joe Melbinger had the misfortune to have his barn destroyed by fire.

Michael Stroinski, son of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Stroinski, of the Town of Withee, died of a tuberculosis-meningitis infection at the Veterans-Adm. Hospital at Silver City, New Mexico on Friday, July 8, 1932.

50 Years Ago (1957)

Fire Monday destroyed the Pine Grove Cheese Factory about 6 miles northeast of Loyal in Clark County’s Town of Beaver.  The property was owned by the Pauly Cheese Company of Green Bay and was managed by Elmer Meissner.

The Wisconsin Association of Vocational Agriculture honored seven members, including the local agriculture teacher Roy Swanson at a banquet at the Loraine Hotel for long periods of service as agricultural teachers when there were so many other ways and means of making a living at more lucrative salaries.

25 Years Ago (1982)

Nineteen women from Clark County will be vying for the title of Miss Clark County, with Miss Thorp, Heidi Hoffman, sponsored by the Thorp Telephone Company, to compete in the contest that will be held on July 24 at the American Legion Hall in Loyal.

Selected from among several applicants as the new principal for Thorp Catholic School; is Mrs. Elmae Passineau.

Two rural Granton men died instantly in the crash of a light plane just after 8 p.m., Sunday, a short distance north of Neillsville in the Town of Pine Valley.

10 Years Ago (1997)

 Staff Sergeant Carol Rowell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tony Plechacek of Thorp, was recently presented with the second oak leaf cluster to her Air Force Commendation medal by her commanding officer Co. Frederick L. Williams.
