100 Years Ago (1907)

Father Dorrenbach pastor of St. Bernard’s Church here a couple of years ago, going from here to Hewett, has been installed as pastor of St. Mary’s Church at Neillsville.

At a meeting of the directors of the Thorp Dairy Company held last week, Rudolph Verwyst was elected manager of the new enterprise.  Geo. M. Ballentine was also hired as butter maker.

75 Years Ago (1932)

The American Legion Club building is now progressing rapidly.  The frame work and rafters were erected and the sides and roof have been boarded up and ready for shingling.

On Sunday, the last, July 31, the Polish National Alliance, Commune No. 153, of Thorp and Lublin, and Thaddeus Koszciuszko Group No. 646 of Thorp celebrated the centennial anniversary of the birth of Washington and also commemorated the two Polish Generals, Koszciuszko and Pulaski, for the services they voluntarily rendered this country during the Revolutionary War.

50 Years Ago (1957)

The first near tragedy of the Thorp swimming pool was avoided by the quick work of lifeguards Monday afternoon, whom pulled a 4-yeaar-old girl from the swimming pool and administered artificial respiration.

Construction on a proposed addition to Stanley Victory Memorial Hospital will start in the fall, according to information received Wednesday.

The four year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Smith of Eidsvold wandered into the woods to pick flowers near the Harley Copenhaver home in Worden, Sunday afternoon, where the Smiths were visiting on Sunday.  She did not return and after a several hour search a call for help was sent to the local cavalry troop, the members of which promptly responded but before they got action the little Miss was discovered walking along the highway about three miles from the Copenhaver home.

25 Years Ago (1982)

Mr. Jerome Fiene has been selected as the new principal for the Thorp Public Grade School following a special meeting of the Thorp Board of Education on Wednesday evening, July 28.

10 Years Ago (1997)

A 10.5 million project to upgrade Wisconsin Highway 29 to four lanes from Owen to Abbotsford has reached the halfway point on schedule according to Joe Olson, Project Supervisor.

Thorp resident Renette Messing is all smiles with four of the most wanted tickets in football-Dom this week, the pre-season rematch of January’s Super Bowl between the Green Bay Packers and the New England Patriots.
