100 Years Ago (1908)

Stanley Sunbeams – There are reported to be three to four cases of small pox two miles south of Stanley, all in one family.

The saloon of Eugene Martin, west of Eidsvold, was destroyed by fire a couple of weeks ago, a defective chimney being the cause.

Nye, Lusk & Hudson Co. have purchased a portable sawmill outfit and will locate the same in the western portion of the Town of Mead where they have about 6,000,000 feet of logs to manufacture into lumber.

Ans. Heagle was down from Gilman over Sunday last and reports that Gilman Mfg. Co’s heading mill in full operation.

75 Years ago (1933)

John Verkuilen has been appointed postmaster to serve out the term of R. H. Tolford, deceased, and began serving the public on Wednesday.

Goggle Eye News – The new school located in this neighborhood has been named by the county superintendent and will now be known as the “Bi-Centennial School.”

The farm horse, which during the years of tractor popularity, trudged along quite neglected and almost forgotten, has suddenly found favor among farmers of the nation.

A fire of unknown origin completely destroyed Bruno Krylowski’s Pool Room and Ben Skaleski’s restaurant about 11:30 Saturday evening.

50 Years Ago (1958)

The Thorp City Volunteer Fire department was called out about 11:15 o’clock Tuesday evening to battle a fire, which broke out in the office of the Lyman Lumber & Fuel Co., on the north side of the railroad tracks here on Main Street.

A plaque was recently placed at the library here, commemorating the originators.  The names on a plaque in the Thorp Public Library are the names of the first members of the Woman’s Union Club; the club which built the library.

The Rev. Harry Lee, 83, who served as pastor of the Methodist Church here from 1945 to 1947, died Jan. 12, 1958 at the home of his daughter Mrs. Paul Mantz, Waukesha, WI.

25 Years Ago (1983)

Three Thorp High School wrestlers established a new record last Saturday, February 5, during the small school Cloverbelt wrestling tournament held at Fall Creek, by taking first and becoming individual champions in their respective weight classes: Tedd Slowiak in the 145 pound weight class, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Slowiak, Sr.; Danny Nowak in the 132 pound weight class, son of Mrs. Pat Nowak, and Gilbert Voelker in the 138 pound class, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Voelker.

10 Years Ago (1998)

The 1998 Sadie Hawkins Court attendants are Russell Lis, Doug Flashinski, Craig Paul, Craig Alger, Jason Haas, Amanda Ederer, Megan Albert, Karen Nowobielski, Miriam Arosemena, and Andrea Larson.
