100 Years Ago (1908)

The plan of guaranteed bank deposits has probably found favor, among all classes of people and irrespective of political affiliation, more rapidly than any other public question.

The California Cars here February 27 and 28 and will give our people a treat such as they probably may never have again and old and young should not miss it for the small price asked, and the beautiful souvenir they will get as a reminder of their visit.

75 Years Ago (1933)

Goggle Eye News – The severe cold weather of the past few days kept many children from attending school.  There are also some reports of losses of the winter’s supply of vegetables and potatoes due to freezing.

The younger generation will have to run to the dictionary for the “bustle” is back.  Hand-knitted effects are enormously chic for all sports clothes with the simulated patterns running a close second in popular esteem.

The fire department was called to the home of Jos. Tobola on Wednesday evening of last week to subdue a chimney fire.  No damage resulted.

50 Years Ago (1958)

A reduction of one cent per gallon was made this week by gas stations in Thorp.  Prices per gallon now being sold in the city are 31.9 cents for regular gas and 35.7 cents for ethyl.

John Maier, Thorp, was re-elected director of the Equity Cooperative Livestock Sales Association at a meeting held in Eau Claire.

The Thorp Cardinals walked off with the Cloverbelt conference title as they defeated Altoona 69-50 in the second game of the Cloverbelt tournament at Neillsville Saturday night.

Walter Jarocki, Abbotsford, formerly of Thorp, has purchased the Lookout Bar, west of Abbotsford on Highway 29 and plans to reopen it about March 1st.

25 Years Ago (1983)

The new pastor of the Thorp Pentecostal Tabernacle is Joseph Duane.  He assumed his duties at the Tabernacle on January 30.

As a continuation of Scouting Anniversary month activities, Den 2 Cub Scouts under the leadership of Den Leader Kathy Gilbert, demonstrated woodworking skills in the lobby of the Thorp IGA on Saturday, Feb. 19.

10 Years Ago (1998)

Thorp High School student Keith Sladek has been chosen to represent the United States at the 1998 Paralympics Games in Nagano, Japan, March 5-14.

Ice conditions are deteriorating rapidly and people with ice fishing shanties on the area lakes and flowages should consider removing them soon, according to conservation wardens in West-Central Wisconsin.
